I am a fitness junkie! I love how I feel after a good workout so I try to incorporate exercise into my daily routine. Although I do occasionally just hit the gym, I sometimes find it more difficult to be motivated to push myself. More often than not, I sign up for fitness classes because I love having that accountability and someone pushing me to work harder. I am also more motivated when I’m working out with a group of people all striving towards the same goal. Group classes provide a sense of community and social bonding. A little friendly competition never hurt anyone either! If anything, it may push you to work a bit harder than you normally would if you were training solo.
Here are some of my favourite fitness classes:
1) TRX Suspension Training
I absolutely love TRX because you use your own body weight to build your core and sculpt your entire body. It’s challenging because it requires your core to be engaged all the time.
2) Lagree Pilates
The megaformer is my favourite machine for sculpting and toning the core and booty. It definitely looks intimidating at first, but once you’ve tried it you might become addicted like I have. Typically, the classes are about 40 minutes long and involve slow, deliberate movements that active slow-twitch muscle fibers. The mantra seems to be “the slower you go, the stronger you are.”
Favourite Studio in YVR: Lagree West (Lonsdale, Gastown, Kitsilano)
3) Circuit Training
I really enjoy group circuit training because it includes both cardio as well as strength training, so you get your heart rate up and you tone and strengthen your muscles. There is so much variety and each class is different, so you never feel like you’re doing the same thing, which spices things up and keeps it fresh.
4) Hot Yoga
I first got into hot yoga years ago as a means of destressing. Right off the bat, I fell in love. I mean who doesn’t love a good detoxifying sweat?! I always leave any hot yoga classes feeling totally zened out and at peace. Over the years, I’ve seen improvements in my flexibility and strength from holding poses. The key is to focus on your breath and to continue breathing through the poses.
I personally really don’t enjoy cardio. In fact, I despise it! I can’t think of anything more boring than running on a treadmill or an elliptical. If you think a minute goes by really fast, you’ve never been on a treadmill. Kickboxing is an amazing way to get your heart rate up in a fun way! I am always amazed at how fast an hour would fly by each class. I’m left drenched in sweat and feeling like a total badass!
Classpass has been great, as it has allowed me to enjoy a variety of fitness classes. To date, I’ve taken over 300 classes through Classpass and I don’t plan on stopping any time soon. It’s also offered in Calgary & Toronto in Canada as well as all over the US, so you can change your location on the app when you travel & take advantage of fitness classes wherever you are!
